Serenity - A Delightful Pleasure

When Fox canceled a fun little show called Firefly, only eleven episodes in, its hardcore fans complained very loudly and angrily.

Fox has already botched the series.  They declined to run the two hour premiere (it was eventually retooled and finally run after the end of the series), and then ran the series out of order.  It rather screwed up the whole idea of continuity.  The fans were understandably upset at the unceremonious cancellation of the series, and mourned its passing.

Fortunately, fan support, the stubborn efforts of popular writer and director Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel), and Universal's willingness to support the film, enabled the show to make its reappearance, now on the larger than life motion picture screen.

I was lucky enough to be able to attend a midnight showing on release day, which was attended by what had to be dedicated fans.  The excitement level was high, and the anticipation of what was to come was enormous.

The movie hit the screen and we found ourselves entranced.  The cast was wonderful, the effects were great, the story was fun (just what was River's back story, anyway?), and we completely lost track of time while we devoured the visual feast set before us.

In all fairness, I would suggest that emotionally sensitive youngsters watch this movie only with parental supervision.  There are some very intense and disturbing scenes that might upset them.

The movie brought forth all sorts of emotions, from wonder to joy to anger to sorrow...just the right sort of movie, at least as far as I am concerned.  It's great for newcomers to the Firefly universe, as well as the hardcore fan.  I've already started looking for the DVD set for my collection.  I see there are comics available, and a pending novel...I think I'm going to have some new reading material, as well...

Take a chance...go see Serenity.
